Replacing old technology

with the simple

press of a button

The Burling Turn Assist Bed

DON'T GET LEFT BEHIND USING THE SAME OLD BEDS AND OLD TECHNOLOGY

  INTRODUCTION

The current physicality of turning care recipients within their bed results in manual handling injuries for staff and incidences of both pressure injuries and skin tears for residents. The process of turning residents within their bed is currently a two person task. Increasingly, this has become a pressure point as workforce demands grow. Additionally, invasive and disruptive pressure area care provided in bed overnight, leads to poor sleep quality for residents.

BACKGROUND

Technical Problem - Currently, turning residents in bed who are unable to turn themselves is problematic. The current process of physically turning a resident within their bed using a slide sheet results in staff manual handling injuries & increased incidences of skin tears and pressure injuries for residents.

Solution to problem -  Development of a bed that enables one care giver, with the press of a button, to gently turn the resident 0-50 degrees within the bed. Current best practice indicates a 30 degree turn is required at a minimum. The resident can be turned by one staff member at 2, 3 or 4 hourly intervals, in a way that is gentle, non-invasive and allows for uninterrupted sleep overnight.

Advantageous Effects of the Burling Turn Assist Bed - The gentle turn is done without staff members lifting or sliding the resident, leading to a reduction in manual handling injuries for the staff plus better quality sleep and a better quality of life for the residents through a reduction in pressure injuries and skin tear injuries.

BENEFITS

The Burling Turn Assist Bed will allow you to achieve the following key benefits

* The Burling Turn Assist Bed will alleviate the need for additional care staff to be rostered on the night duty for the purpose of pairing up to turn immobile residents in bed from side to side 2-4 times overnight.

* The Burling Turn Assist Bed will significantly reduce the physical demands on care staff providing care to immobile residents, leading to a reduction in workplace injuries. This will have a positive impact on workforce demand, workforce expense and work health & safety injury claims.

* The Burling Turn Assist Bed will significantly reduce the incidences of pressure injuries and skin tears for immobile residents. This will in turn reduce the burden on wound management, both in terms of staff time and medical consumable costs for the organisation and pain/discomfort for the resident.

* The Burling Turn Assist Bed will enable uninterrupted sleep for residents overnight. The detrimental effects of poor sleep are well documented.
